Simmer’s Morning Skate: Jersey Ad’ Fall-out, Gretzky, The Manthas, Contracts

Will there be a phone company, a bank, or a casino on the Vancouver Canucks jerseys come 2022? Who knows, but the NHL Board of Governors voted to allow the sale and placement of small ad’s on “sweaters” for the first time in history. That’s if you don’t count the jersey manufacturers of course. We’re used to seeing a CCM or a Reebok symbol somewhere on there.

But this is different. How long until the jerseys are smothered with ad’s similar to the look in European hockey? The closer you get to the Blackhawk or Red Wing insignia, the higher the price. Probably not long. Rationalize revenue losses from Covid all you want, it’s an excuse for the inevitable. Ultimately greed will be the most powerful of motivators. TSN offers a video yay and nay on the jersey advertising argument.

Washington Hockey Now has a neat little story on Elizabeth Mantha, an accomplished referee and the sister of NHL player Anthony Mantha. It also serves as a nice preview for our Womens World Championship preview popping up here shortly. The tournament begins this Friday in Calgary.

Is the next contract for Sasha Barkov in Florida a done deal? George Richards at Florida Hockey Now seems to think so. Understandably, Panthers GM Bill Zito wants to lock his captain up much sooner than later.

What the hell is an NFT and why is Wayne Gretzky cashing in on them? Sportsnet answers those questions while discovering a relatively new place for fans to waste, ahem, spend their money. (Sorry, just a first impression.)

Speaking of Sportsnet, this sentence says it all, but you’ll find other details in this story:

“In addition to building a statue in his likeness at the True North Square’s plaza, the Winnipeg Jets have applied to re-name a two-block stretch near the Canada Life Centre in honour of the late Dale Hawerchuk.”

Lastly, should a San Jose Sharks prospect wear the #66? Hell yes. He’s not a Penguin and if Mario Lemieux‘s jersey is taboo around the league, then #9 should be as well. Fine with Gretzky and #99, but enough already. Sheng Peng has this story and other development camp tales at SJ Hockey Now.
