NHL Skate: Bad Night for Canucks Fans, Women Win, Trade Talk

Goalie Thatcher Demko gave up just this one goal to Connor Murphy in the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

Wednesday night was not a good one for those following the Vancouver Canucks playoff aspirations. Everyone they’re chasing in the NHL Pacific Division standings took care of business last night.

While the Edmonton Oilers were in Washington beating the Capitals 5-3, the Calgary Flames doubled up the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3.

As you lick your wounds …

Let’s Skate! …

ย Chowdah or Chattah?

Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now got things riled up a bit yesterday by publishing reports that the Bruins had interest in native son Conor Garland and/or Vancouver Canucks leading scorer JT Miller. The crux of the story was whether or not the Beantowners would be willing to give up their 2021 21st-overall pick and current Vancouver Giants forward Fabian Lysell.ย

Murphy reports that the Vancouver Canucks love the B’s prospect who’s playing right in their backyard. The Gothenberg, Sweden native right winger has 32 points in 26 Western Hockey League games so far this season. I would direct Murph’ to my ‘assumptions’ story for now, as to not make an ass out of either of us.

Dominant Ladies

Team Canada romped to a 12-1 victory over Switzerland yesterday in Beijing in their opening game of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Young star Sarah Fillier, our old pal Natalie Spooner, and Blayre Turnbull all scored two goals apiece.

In fact, “Spoons” had a five point game as did Claire Thompson, who scored her first ever Team Canada goal and added four assists.

The Canadians outshot the Swiss 70-15. Whaaaat? Yep, and that ties the Team Canada Olympic record for shots in a game previously set against Sweden back in 2002.

The Canadian women next play Friday against Finland in a game that will be televised in prime time in the pacific time zone. 8 pm.

The All-Star Shuffle

Alexander Ovechkin, Metropolitan Division All-Star captain, won’t be playing on Saturday in Las Vegas after all. The legendary sniper missed Wednesday’s home game against the Oilers and will miss out on the weekend festivities due to a positive Covid test.

Claude Giroux of the Flyers takes over the captain gig while Ovie’s teammate Tom Wilson was added to the roster to take his place. Their teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov had been added earlier to replace injured New York Rangers defenceman Adam Fox.

There was also a shuffle in the Central Division. Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators had already been added to replace Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon who has a broken jaw. Joe Pavelski of the Dallas Stars has since been named captain of that squad.

Goalie Thatcher Demko is the Vancouver Canucks lone representative.
