ICYMI, VHN published two stories over the weekend about new Vancouver Canucks assistant coach MIke Yeo and his work on special teams for the club. We should reiterate that Yeo will be collaborating with former Abbotsford Canucks head coach turned Vancouver assistant Trent Cull on the penalty kill.

The coaches should be kicking around the team’s informal skates on Monday, although only as observers, planners and shmoozers as the rest of the Canucks roster finds its way back to town. The formal staffers, other than goalie coach Ian Clark, aren’t allowed on the ice with the players until training camp. Skills instructor Yogi Svejkovsky has been helping to coordinate drills in the meantime.

The plan for now is for head coach Bruce Boudreau and all three of his assistants, Yeo, Cull, and Jason King, to be on the bench during the preseason. Boudreau hasn’t decided if that arrangement will carry over to the regular season.

Let’s Skate!

Hockey Insiders Kevin Weekes and Elliotte Friedman are both reporting the Montreal Canadiens are engaged in contract talks with goaltender Jake Allen. The 32-year-old netminder has one year remaining on his contract worth $2.875-million and it might not be a bad idea to lock him up with Carey Price reportedly heading to retirement.

It seems likely the Habs will get Allen signed. If not, options abound in a soft goalie market. Montreal Hockey Now reported teams have inquired about Allen’s availability as several NHL clubs are still looking to upgrade their goaltending. Unless the New York Islanders change their mind and deal Semyon Varlamov, the options are very limited.

Allen arrived in Montreal in September of 2020 in a trade with the St. Louis Blues.

Jumbo Returns!?

Not so fast. Yes, Joe Thornton is back in San Jose, but no commitment has been given to the 24-year NHL veteran to continue playing for the Sharks or any other NHL club at this point. Yet it does raise some interesting possibilities and questions. ‘Penger’ has the story from Northern California. San Jose Sharks.
